This is a competitive program for men of all ages. We race eights, fours and pairs in Lightweight, Open and Masters events. Most of the team members also compete in sculling events. The team roster of roughly 35 rowers includes a strong contingent of high-performing lightweights, a growing heavyweight group, and about 15 masters. In addition, we welcome top collegiate athletes in the summer for both the Lightweight and Open programs. The Masters rowers range in age from 27 to 70. The team can field competitive boats in almost any event.
Joining the Men's Sweep Program
The program welcomes new members. Applicants should be fit, with good technical skills, and a willingness to work hard. You may join us for a two-week try-out period before starting the application process. Skilled coxswains are also welcome. If you are interested in joining the lightweight men's high-performance group, contact bruce_h_smith@yahoo.com. For the open program, contact jeff_doherty@hotmail.com. For the masters, ernest.cook@tpl.org.
Coaching and Workouts:
The high-performance lightweight men are coached by Bruce Smith. He has more than a decade of coaching experience ranging from the U.S. Junior National Team and Dartmouth College, to several successful competitive rowing programs in the greater Chicago area. As a competitive rower, Bruce has won gold medals at both the Head of the Charles and Canadian Henley and was a silver medalist at the 1999 US Nationals. Practices/workouts are typically twice a day.
The open and masters men are coached by Dale Wickenheiser. He has coached college, youth, open and masters programs in the Boston area. He has rowed competitively with Rutgers University and clubs including Lake Washington, Occoquan and Potomac. Coached practices are held three mornings a week. The training program includes erg workouts, weights and additional rowing other days of the week.
